East Hawaiʻi Indivisible
Service area: East Hawai'i Island including Lower Puna, Keaʻau, Hilo, and Volcano
Organizing across East Hawaiʻi to defend democracy, protect civil rights, and build lasting political power — from Hilo to Volcano.
Hilo One, Keaʻau, and Volcano: Stronger together
East Hawai’i Indivisible was established in 2026, marking the historic unification of three dedicated grassroots chapters: Hilo One Indivisible, Indivisible Keaʻau, and Indivisible Volcano. This merger, spearheaded by Hilo One leader Terry McDonald, creates a single, powerful voice for justice and democracy.
Hilo One Indivisible organized in Hilo, a city with a deep tradition of political activism rooted in Hawaiian culture. Grounded in that legacy, the chapter worked to resist authoritarianism, advocate for progressive policies, and mobilize community members.
Indivisible Keaʻau came together in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election and grew quickly, reaching into surrounding communities that lacked a local Indivisible presence. The chapter focused on food security, healthcare access, and freedom from discrimination, and is now a popular Pop-Up location.
Indivisible Volcano (V-CAN) was one of the earliest chapters on the island, founded after the election in 2016. Over the years, V-CAN built a civic education program, invited elected officials and community leaders to speak on key issues, and ran postcard and letter-writing campaigns to boost voter turnout in battleground states.
Together, these three communities now organize as East Hawai’i Indivisible — a broader, stronger network covering the eastern side of Hawai’i Island.
Activism: Legislation, immigrant rights, and mainland elections
East Hawai’i Indivisible is building a powerful activist community with real impact on County and State legislation, immigrant rights, and mainland elections. We are also growing the next generation of activists by bringing the Indivisible name and mission to the young people who call this island home.
We are emphatically pro-democracy, committed to the right to vote, and firm believers in the rule of law. We are dedicated to the dignity and worth of all people, and to the conviction that American democracy — for all its failures — is worth saving and rebuilding. In Lincoln’s words, we work toward a “new birth of freedom.”
