Kaʻu Voices
Abbreviation: Kaʻu
A small but mighty group from Kaʻu, fighting for voting rights, environmental protection, and progressive change — one postcard at a time.
Kaʻu Voices was founded in 2017, in the wake of the Women’s March, by Laurie Boyle and Melissa Wheeler. What started as a determined response to the first Trump administration has grown into a committed community of activists with a large mailing list and a track record of action.
The group meets monthly to discuss local and federal politics and take concrete steps: writing postcards to voters in swing states, signing petitions, calling and emailing elected officials, and submitting testimony. Their issues span voter registration and turnout, environmental protection, clean water, healthcare, reproductive rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, immigration, gun safety, and economic justice for working families.
