Our Story
November 5, 2024: First, there was shock, disbelief, and grief. We all had hoped for a different outcome, and to finally celebrate a female US President. Our hearts were aching for the America we once knew.
By January 20, 2025, the fire within us roared back, this time hotter than ever. We planned, prepared, organized, and on February 5th, we returned to Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway for our first protest. 100 of us showed up to stand against the Musk-Trump coup. We discovered that we were not alone. There, we learned about Matriarchy Rising, led by the indomitable Yvette Kay, who had organized resistance movements since the 2017 Women’s March. We joined hands.
By April 5, 2025, the 100 became 1,000 Kona residents who joined the Hands Off protests. On June 14th, 1,500 showed up to Kick Out The Clowns and declare No Kings in America.
While Kona may be a laid-back place, jokingly referred to as sleepy “Kailua Coma,” Kona Indivisible (KIND) is passionate about saving our democracy. Join us, meet like-minded folks, and Make America KIND Again.

Kona Indivisible State & Local Candidate Pledge
Elections shouldn't be a guessing game. Voters deserve to know where the people asking for their vote actually stand — not just in campaign ads, but on the specific issues that shape daily life on Hawaiʻi Island: housing, healthcare, government accountability, immigrant safety, climate, and equity.
The KIND Candidate Pledge gives us that clarity. We ask candidates for state and county office to publicly commit to a set of principles and priorities our members care about. When a candidate signs, we publish their name and campaign website here. It's a simple, transparent way to distinguish candidates who are willing to put their values on the record from those who aren't.

Why a pledge, and not an endorsement
You may notice we're calling this a pledge, not an endorsement — that's intentional. A formal endorsement process takes significant staff time and vetting capacity: verifying claims, researching records, and standing behind a candidate with our full organizational weight. As an all-volunteer chapter, we don't have those resources to spend on every race.
A pledge does something different. We're not picking winners — we're asking candidates to declare, publicly and on the record, whether they stand with the values our community has organized around. That's a lower bar for us to administer, and a meaningful one for voters to see.

Join KIND postcarding events
We organize regular postcarding "parties" at various locations along the Kona Coast. These events are a fantastic opportunity to connect with like-minded pro-democracy advocates and make new friends while making a difference.
